Tour Description

A journey through history, from the origins of Western civilization to the present, embodied in the fabric of the city, a UNESCO world heritage site, which preserves exceptional testimonies from every age, from the imposing monuments of the old town to the Early Christian basilicas and the masterpieces inherited from the Byzantine and Renaissance periods, from the artistic and monumental heritage of Papal Rome and of the Baroque period to the bubbling, cultural vitality of the modern city.

Experience the unique atmosphere of this city, which has been the melting pot of races and cultures for thousands of years. Which is one of the reason why Rome has always been considered the emblematic capital of the Mediterranean. As soon as you get to Rome, you will be greeted by an English speaking expert local guide who will lead you on an unforgettable walk to discover the heart of the city.

You will be captured by lively Piazza di Spagna, with its splendid Spanish Steps (18th century) and Trinità dei Monti; admire the famous luxury shopping streets and throw a coin into the magnificent Trevi Fountain, always teeming with tourists, longing to see this symbol of the “dolce vita” (the sweet life). Walking along the ancient, narrow streets, one suddenly comes across the superb Pantheon (II century BC.) with its amazing open dome that is still the largest in the world – where the kings of Italy and Raphael are buried.

At the end of the tour you will have time to appreciate the famous Roman cuisine, when you lunch in one of the inviting Roman restaurants. Your driver will then take you for a wonderful scenic tour during which you can admire the most important monuments of Imperial Rome: the Colosseum (72 AD), symbol of the city, the archaeological area of the Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia, with the impressive monument named Vittoriano and finally, on the other side of the River Tiber, you will be able to see Saint Peter’s Square, the centre of Christianity, with the splendid Basilica dominated by the dome designed by Michelangelo and surrounded by Bernini’s monumental colonnade.

At the end of the visit, your driver will take you to the breathtaking terrace of the Gianicolo Park, from which you can cast a farewell glance over the magnificent city.

Additional Info

Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of Tiber river. Vatican City is an independent country within the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states..

Rome’s history spans more than two and a half thousand years, since its legendary founding in 753 BC. Rome is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe. It is referred to as “The Eternal City(Latin: Roma Aeterna), a central notion in ancient Roman culture. In the ancient world it was successively the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, and is regarded as one of the birthplaces of Western civilization. Since the 1st century AD, Rome has been considered the seat of the Papacy and in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic.

After the Middle Ages, almost all the popes since Nicholas V (1422–55) pursued coherently along four hundred years an architectonic and urbanistic program aimed to make of the city the world`s artistic and cultural center. Due to that, Rome became first one of the major centers of the Italian Renaissance along with Florence, and then the birthplace of Baroque style. Famous artists and architects, such as – to name just a few – Bramante, Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini, made of the city the center of their activity, creating masterpieces like St Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, Raphael Rooms and St. Peter’s Square.

Its historic centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Monuments and museums such as the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are among the world’s most visited tourist destinations with both locations receiving millions of tourists a year.
