Total immersion in the art of Michelangelo to know his most renowned work, the “David”, and other important works of art such as ”I Prigioni” and ”San Matteo” and the “Palestrina Pietà”.
The young Michelangelo carved the David from a huge block of rough marble in three years, creating an imposing sculpture of absolute beauty, an icon of the renaissance model.
He depicted a magnificent nude young man at the height of his physical vigor, whose intense expression of strength and courage, which originated from an absolute faith in God, roses as a symbol of power and invincibility of the Florentine Republic at the time of its maximum splendor.
Once the guided tour is over, it is possible to stay in the museum.

The sculpture was allegedly brought to the Accademia for reasons of conservation, although other factors were involved in its move from its previous outdoor location on Piazza della Signoria. The original intention was to create a Michelangelo Museum, with original sculptures and drawings, to celebrate the fourth centenary of the artist’s birth. Today, the gallery’s small collection of Michelangelo’s work includes his four unfinished Prisoners, intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II, and a statue of Saint Matthew, also unfinished. In 1939, these were joined by a Pietà discovered in the Barberini chapel in Palestrina, though experts now consider its attribution to Michelangelo to be dubious. The “David” in the Accademia is the original. There is a replica in the Piazza della Signoria.
Other works on display are Florentine paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, including works by Paolo Uccello, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli and Andrea del Sarto; and, from the High Renaissance, Giambologna’s original plaster for the Rape of the Sabine Women. As well as a number of Florentine Gothic paintings, the gallery houses the idiosyncratic collection of Russian icons assembled by the Grand Dukes of the House of Lorraine, of which Leopoldo was one.
You may also like to visit other sections inside the Gallery, as the most important and wide collection of gold-bottomed paintings, and especially the Musical Instruments Museum, where are exposed many objects belonging to the historical collection of the Conservatory Luigi Cherubuni, a renowned composer born in Florence.
Between these musical rarities are particularly interesting some eighteenth-century instruments, acquired by the Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici, like violins, violas, cellos – some by the famous Antonio Stradivari (a tenor Viola, a 1690 cello, a 1716 violin) or the precious cello by Niccolò Amati, made in 1650.
Many are also the musical curiosities, like the harpsichord from Bartolomeo Cristofori, inventor of pianoforte, and the most ancient upright piano known.
